Helen S. Jarrett

Helen S. Jarrett has been a civil servant for 38 years and a community activist for 25 years. She began her career in 1981 as an Office Aide with the New York City Police Department.

In 1993, Helen became a Principal Administrative Associate, working at Food Stamp Site 15. In 1999, she was promoted to a PAA II as the Assistant Center Manager at F-26, and then in 2001, she was promoted to PAA III as Deputy Director at the Division of Financial Review & Processing, and in 2010 was promoted to Administrative Manager.

As a CWA 1180 member, Helen served on the Education and Organizing committees, and currently serves on the Legislative & Political Action, Caribbean Heritage, Civil Rights & Equity, PAA et al Bargaining, and Civil Service committees. In addition, she is former Chairperson of the Brooklyn Community Coordinating Committee. Helen is a former elected Shop Steward, and was the liaison to the NYS Civil Service Merit Council. She was elected in 2017 to serve on the Executive Board as a Member-At-Large.

She garnered tremendous knowledge and experience working on the political campaigns of NYS Senator John Liu, former Assembly Member candidate Lori Boozer, and Attorney General Letitia James. In 2016, she became Executive Assistant to former Local 1180 President Arthur Cheliotes and the Union’s Mobilization Coordinator. She has taken on several leadership roles within the Local, including coordination for the historic Women’s March of 2017 in Washington, D.C. and the Equal Pay Rally on the steps of City Hall in New York City.

Helen is a proud graduate of the NYS AFL-CIO/Cornell ILR Union Leadership Institute (August 2018) and previously attended the Joseph S. Murphy Institute for Public Administration.

For 15 years. Helen volunteered with the Girl Scout Council of Greater New York. During her tenure, she served as a leader to the Daisy Girl Scouts, and as a Service Unit Manager responsible for more than 500 girls and 35 adults. She was the Chairperson for the Recognition Committee of Brooklyn, and was a trainer for new and established adult leaders.

Since being elected as a Member-At-Large, Helen has served as a delegate to the CWA National Minority Caucus, the District One Leadership Conference, the District One National Convention, and the AFL-CIO COPE Convention. She is a Community Board 5 Board Member in the 42nd Council District, is an elected Alternate Judicial Delegate, and is the Chairperson of the Economic and Development Committee.
